About

Yehlin LEE, a.k.a Rio..[1]

Listener = Researcher = Creator of Sound

Born in Taipei, Taiwan. Yehlin LEE has devoted himself in sound art since 2001. He joined a free-form collective “Taipei Sound Unit” called by sound artist Dajuin Yao. TSU concentrates on the listening / thinking / collecting / re-contextualization of humanistic soundscape in various cites of Taiwan. Meanwhile, he began to build his own hardware/software to create sound. He also translated the complete tutorials of Max/MSP, which is one of the most important programming language for new media nowadays. In 2005, he was accepted into the DEA program of IRCAM, France. However, he found that the current academic computer music trend was driven too much by the hype of new technology / theoretical process, while neglecting the subjective taste / aesthetic toward sound, he decided to quit. Afterwards, he gave solo concerts in various european countries. In 2006, he entered the Post-Diplome program of ENSAD, and created a sound installation Painàsonic, which explores the inter-relationship between auditory and haptic senses. Now he lives in Berlin, Germany.

His concept of art could be described by what he called「極樂喜械」..[2]。By this, he intends to eliminate the border between himself and machine process, and takes the computation / proliferation / error / mutaion of this subjective algorithm as a part of self extension. In this endless internal feedback between subjective taste and machine computation, he tries to use the most rational logic process to reach the limit of irrational / anti-rational synaesthesia state of mind in himself and the others.

[1] Lee is Hakka. His name is not spelled in the conventional mandarin pronounciation but in Hakka.

[2] In short,「極樂喜械」 could be roughly translated as “subjective algorithm”. In long words, 極 (ji2) means “extreme”. 樂(le4) could be “happiness” or “music”. 喜(xi3) means joifulness, and 械(xie4) is machine. Together, it could be “extreme music joyful machine” or “extreme machine for joyful happiness”, or ……
